Many owners wonder whether eggplant (aubergine) is fine for a rabbit. The answer: the flesh is tolerated in very small amounts, but the leaves, stem and green cap must be avoided. Eggplant belongs to the nightshades, a family that produces solanine, a toxic glycoalkaloid concentrated in the green parts. The toxicity of these compounds is well documented in plant toxicology. Why nightshades are a problem
Tomato, potato, pepper, eggplant and their tops contain alkaloids that, in rabbits, can cause digestive upset and lethargy. Raw potato and tomato leaves are clearly dangerous. The rabbit's digestive system, fragile and dependent on steady gut movement, copes poorly with these deviations: the slightest imbalance can trigger gut stasis.
Eggplant: tolerated only at the margin
A tiny piece of ripe flesh, occasionally, poses no danger to most healthy adult rabbits. But eggplant provides nothing essential: it is better skipped in favour of genuinely suitable vegetables. Never give the green parts or a large amount of any single vegetable.
