Herbal and flower hay for rabbits: marketing gimmick or genuine upgrade?

🐇 Rabbits · 🍖 Food · updated 2026-07-11

Herb-and-flower hay for rabbits — enriched with chamomile, marigold, cornflower, dandelion or dried carrot — is neither a pure gimmick nor a must-have: it is an excellent palatability tool for fussy or convalescent rabbits, but it must not replace a good plain hay as the staple. Sold at 6 to 12 € per kilo against 3 to 6 € for a quality plain hay, it earns its keep as a supplement, not as the main ration.

What does a herb-and-flower hay actually contain?

Read the composition: good products list 90 to 95% meadow hay and 5 to 10% identified flowers and herbs. Beware of blends that add cereals, sugary fruit pieces or colourful croquettes: that is no longer hay but a treat in disguise. The classic flowers (chamomile, marigold, rose, cornflower, plantain) are safe at the doses present in these mixes.

What real benefits does it bring the rabbit?

On the other hand, no proven health superpowers: the digestive or calming claims are marketing.

How do you use it without unbalancing the ration?

The base remains a quality plain hay, unlimited — Crau, meadow or second cut depending on needs, as detailed in our guide to choosing hay. Serve the flower hay as a garnish: one handful a day in the rack or scattered for foraging. Money-saving tip: buy dried flowers and plain hay separately and mix them yourself, at half the price — our suggestions are in the guide to healthy treats.

Which rabbits should avoid it?

Overweight rabbits if the blend contains dried fruit, and animals prone to urinary stones where the mix is very rich in calcium-heavy plants (alfalfa, excessive plantain): ask an exotics vet if your rabbit has a urinary history. Find all our comparisons in the rabbit food section.

Frequently asked questions

My rabbit picks out the flowers and leaves the hay — what should I do?

Reduce the share of flower blend: serve the plain hay first, then the flower hay at the end of the day as a foraging reward.

Is flower hay suitable for baby rabbits?

Yes, in small amounts after weaning, provided the blend contains neither fruit nor cereals.

How should it be stored?

Like any hay: dry, away from light, in a ventilated container (never a sealed plastic bag), and used within three months.
