Why do oxalates matter?
A landmark study by Harcourt-Brown, published in 1996 in the journal Veterinary Record on the link between calcium, diet, and dental disease in pet rabbits, notes that certain oxalate-rich greens, spinach included, can bind with calcium in the body if gut bacteria don't metabolise them enough (study on Google Scholar). What amount stays reasonable?
A small handful of fresh leaves, once or twice a week at most, alternated with other greens, carries no identified risk for a healthy, well-hydrated rabbit. It's daily, exclusive feeding that causes problems, not an occasional leaf mixed into a varied ration.
How to rotate greens to limit oxalates?
- Alternate spinach with romaine lettuce, basil, or radish tops, which are lower in oxalates.
- Never make a single vegetable the base of the daily green ration.
- Make sure clean water stays available at all times, since it helps urinary clearance.
