Aubergine (eggplant) comes up often in questions from rabbit owners, including owners of dwarf rabbits. The answer is nuanced: the flesh of a ripe aubergine can be offered in a very small amount and occasionally, but it isn't an ideal vegetable, and some parts of the plant must be avoided. Flesh yes, leaves and stem no
Aubergine belongs to the nightshade family, like tomato and potato. Its leaves, stem and green or unripe fruit contain solanine, a toxic compound. So you never give the foliage or an unripe aubergine. Only the flesh of a well-ripened fruit, raw and washed, without the stalk, can be considered. How much, how often
If you offer some, a small dice-sized piece, once or twice a week at most, is plenty. Aubergine is low in useful nutrients and full of water: eaten in excess, it can cause soft stools. Hay first, always
