Can rabbits eat cucumber?
Yes, cucumber is one of the safe vegetables for rabbits: no toxin, no excess sugar, skin and seeds included when it hasn't been treated. Its only flaw is being about 96% water, with almost no fibre — and it is fibre intake, hay first, that governs a rabbit's digestive health. How much cucumber should you offer?
Two or three thin slices, two to three times a week, are enough for an adult rabbit. Introduce it like any new food: a small amount the first time, then watch the droppings for twenty-four hours. Softer droppings mean the portion was too generous or too frequent.
Skin, seeds, peelings: what to keep?
The skin, richer in fibre than the flesh, is the most worthwhile part — pick an unwaxed cucumber, ideally organic, and wash it thoroughly. The soft seeds of a fresh cucumber pose no problem. Avoid seasoned preparations though: vinegar, salt or dressing have no place in a hutch.
A refreshing ally, not a staple
