Long-haired or short-haired, coat care is not a matter of style but of how many mats you have to untangle each week: a long-haired cat needs thorough brushing several times a week, while a short-haired cat is fine with once a week. The real difference is not the price of the tools, it is the time you are willing to put in.

Long or short hair: what actually differs in coat care?
A short-haired cat has a dense undercoat but short guard hairs that rarely tangle: shedding mostly shows up on the sofa, rarely as mats. A medium or long-haired cat (Persian, Ragdoll, Birman) builds up mats behind the ears, under the armpits and around the hindquarters as soon as a single week of brushing is skipped. Left untreated, these mats tighten until they pull on the skin and may need a vet clip under sedation.
Which brush should you choose for each coat length?
- Short hair: a rubber grooming glove or soft-pin brush, 8 to 15 €, once a week is enough.
- Medium hair: a wide-tooth comb to detangle, then a slicker brush for the undercoat — budget 15 to 25 € for both.
- Long hair (Persian, Ragdoll): a fine metal comb, a slicker brush and a detangling spray, budget 25 to 35 € for a full kit.
- Any coat length: a rubber finishing brush removes dead hair without irritating the skin, 6 to 10 €.
Does a short-haired cat need brushing as often as a long-haired one?
No, but a weekly brush still reduces the hair swallowed during self-grooming and therefore the hairballs brought back up. What budget should you plan for coat care?
With the right tools used weekly, the yearly budget stays modest: 20 to 40 € of gear that lasts several years. Costs rise mainly when mats are neglected: professional grooming to detangle a badly matted Persian costs 40 to 70 € at a groomer, against a sedated clip at the vet if mats are too tight against the skin. Frequently asked questions
My cat still gets mats despite regular brushing, what should I do?
Check the at-risk areas (armpits, behind the ears, hindquarters) where the brush often glides too quickly. A fine-tooth comb finishes the job. If a mat is already stuck to the skin, do not pull it out: leave it to a groomer or your vet.
Does a short-haired cat shed more than a long-haired one?
Often it looks that way, since short, stiff hairs embed themselves in fabric and are more visible. The actual amount of shedding depends mostly on season and breed, not just coat length.
Should you shave a long-haired cat in summer?
This is generally not necessary or recommended: the coat also protects against heat and sun. Extra brushing during the spring shed is enough in most cases; ask your vet if you are unsure.
