Who it is for, and who it is not for

This guide is for you if…

  • You have just adopted a kitten and want to know what to do, and when, during its first year.
  • Your cat is an adult or a senior and you want to check its vaccines, deworming, weight and litter habits.
  • You want to recognize pain and emergencies before it is too late.
  • You want a realistic budget, item by item, for your cat’s whole life.

It will not help you if…

  • You are looking for veterinary advice, a diagnosis or drug dosages: this guide gives none.
  • You are a breeder or professional: breeding is not covered.
  • You need a detailed guide to UK or US law: the legal sections focus on France, with short notes for other countries.

Covered or uncovered: what the study says

It is a common question, and it has been tested. Grigg, Pick and Nibblett (Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2013) offered 28 cats a covered and an uncovered box, cleaned daily, and weighed the waste in each. Overall, there was no difference in use between the two types. Eight cats showed a preference, four for covered and four for uncovered. The authors conclude that if boxes are cleaned at least once a day, most cats will not show a preference, and that it is worth offering a cat both to find out whether it has one.

The AAFP/ISFM guidelines still recommend open boxes “whenever possible”, for a reason that concerns you: it is easier to see what is happening and to clean often. If you choose a covered box, be all the more regular about scooping.
