A mechanism triggered by light, not cold
It is not the cold that triggers the moult, but day length. As days shorten, the dwarf hamster picks up on this shift in photoperiod and sets off a hormonal cascade that changes the pigmentation of its new coat: an adaptation inherited from its natural habitat, where a paler coat helps it blend into snow.
Why some hamsters barely change at all
How much the coat changes varies a lot between bloodlines and the animal's actual light exposure. An indoor dwarf hamster kept under constant artificial lighting year-round may show only a faint moult, because its body never clearly registers the natural drop in daylight. That is not an anomaly: it is simply the effect of a less seasonal environment.
Normal moult or a skin problem?
A gradual seasonal moult, without patchy fur loss or irritated skin, is a normal process and should not be confused with dermatitis or external parasites. Intense scratching, scabs or localised bald patches call for a vet visit rather than a wait-and-see approach.
