Why does a hamster become fearful?
A recent move, a cage set up somewhere too noisy or too exposed to daylight, or simply a naturally shy temperament in some individuals explain most cases. A hamster is also prey in the wild: any sudden approach from above, which mimics an aerial predator, triggers a flight or defensive-bite reflex.
What's the first step for building trust?
For a week, stick to talking softly near the cage and slipping a favorite seed through the bars, without ever opening the cage or trying to touch the animal. The goal at this stage is purely to link your voice and scent with something pleasant, before any attempt at contact.
How do you move on to gradual contact?
- Open the cage and hold a still hand inside, palm open with a seed on it, without trying to grab the hamster.
- Let it come explore and climb onto your hand on its own, at its own pace, rather than picking it up.
- Add a few seconds of contact each day once it climbs on without hesitation.
