A mutation that revealed the precision of its biological clock
Ralph and Menaker published the discovery of a circadian system mutation in the golden Syrian hamster in the journal Science in 1988 (see the study). In animals carrying this mutation, called tau, the activity cycle shortens with striking consistency, dropping from about 24 hours in wild-type animals to close to 20 hours in homozygous animals. This discovery established the Syrian hamster as a reference model for studying the mammalian biological clock, precisely because its natural rhythm is so regular and so measurable.
What this precision means day to day
An animal whose internal clock is this reliable reacts strongly to irregular schedules: feeding at wildly varying times, being forced awake in the middle of the day, or abrupt changes in lighting.
