Why these species recycle part of their droppings
Guinea pigs and chinchillas ferment plant fibre in the cecum, a pouch located near the end of the intestine, where bacteria produce essential nutrients, notably certain B vitamins and bacterial protein. The catch is that the cecum sits past the intestinal segment able to absorb those nutrients: without a second pass through the digestive tract, that production would simply be lost. The animal produces two distinct types of droppings as a result — soft, nutrient-rich cecotropes, which it eats directly as they emerge, and the usual hard droppings, which are eliminated for good.
Recognising this behaviour without worrying
Cecotrophy usually happens late at night or early in the morning, discreetly, with the animal curling its head back to take the soft cecotropes directly before they even touch the ground. This perfectly normal act shouldn't be mistaken for a behavioural disorder or pathological coprophagy: the near-total absence of visible soft droppings in the cage, rather than their presence, is the normal situation.
When this behaviour can become a problem
An overweight animal, or one dealing with arthritis or dental issues, can lose the flexibility needed to reach its backside and end up missing out on this essential nutritional resource, sometimes showing up as deficiencies or a dull coat.
