Metabolic bone disease remains one of the leading preventable causes of death in juvenile veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus), most often linked to an imbalance in calcium, vitamin A or D3. Chameleons in the group receiving no supplemental calcium, vitamin A or cholecalciferol developed metabolic bone disease, regardless of their UVB exposure. UVB light alone, without matching dietary supplementation, does not protect the animal.

The combination that worked without exception

As soon as calcium and vitamin A were supplemented together, no chameleon in that group developed the disease, independent of UVB exposure or cholecalciferol intake. This calcium-vitamin A pairing stands out as the study's genuinely protective foundation, more decisive than either factor alone.

The most complete protocol observed

The best overall prevention came from crickets themselves fed a diet with 12% calcium before being offered, dusted with vitamin A at 250,000 IU/kg and cholecalciferol at 25,000 IU/kg, combined with extended UVB exposure. This protocol combines gut-loading, dusting and light rather than relying on a single lever.

What this means for the daily ration

A juvenile veiled chameleon fed untreated insects, even under quality UVB, stays at risk as long as calcium and vitamin A are not delivered reliably and regularly. Gut-loading feeder insects and dusting remain the two non-negotiable steps, with UVB complementing rather than replacing them.
