Stressed green anole: reading the signs of stress and good health

In the green anole (Anolis carolinensis), colour and behaviour say a lot. This lizard changes hue with temperature and light, but also with social stress: a classic study on social status and the adrenal response showed that subordinate animals turn browner and show elevated corticosterone, while dominants stay green. Colour, an indicator to nuance
An anole may turn brown for many reasons: cool temperatures, rest, but also lasting stress. An individual that is constantly brown, dull and still, while terrarium parameters are good, often signals a problem. Bright green and an animal active by day are rather good signs.
Signs of stress to spot
Permanent hiding, refusing food, rubbing against the glass, the throat fan (dewlap) repeatedly deployed at a reflection or a cage-mate: all are warning signs. Poorly managed cohabitation is a frequent cause, covered in group cohabitation: beginner mistakes. A male stressed by another male's presence will only calm down once separated.
Signs of good health
A healthy anole is bright green at rest, active and curious by day, hunts its insects keenly, sheds cleanly and keeps an intact tail and a well-filled belly. A good shed depends directly on humidity: too dry a terrarium causes incomplete sheds.
Act on the environment first
Before concluding illness, check the fundamentals: working UVB (our UVB guide), temperature, humidity and layout (terrarium size and setup). Most "sad anoles" are in fact poorly housed anoles. If parameters are good and the signs persist, consult an exotics vet.
