A female Chinese water dragon housed alone for years that suddenly starts laying eggs can surprise, even worry, an owner, who may suspect a forgotten mating or some abnormality. A study by Miller, Castañeda Rico, Muletz-Wolz, Campana, McInerney, Augustine, Frere, Peters and Fleischer, published in 2019 in the journal PLOS ONE, used microsatellite genetic markers to confirm that eggs laid by an isolated captive Chinese water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus) resulted from parthenogenesis, reproduction without fertilisation by a male (research on Google Scholar). A clutch possible without ever meeting a male

Genetic analysis confirmed the studied female had produced at least nine offspring with no paternal genetic contribution at all, the strongest evidence to date of parthenogenesis in this species. A female kept isolated her entire life can therefore, in rare cases, produce fertile eggs without ever having been near a male, a phenomenon documented in other lizards but rarely confirmed this precisely.

Why this clutch stays an exceptional event

The parthenogenesis identified in this study remains an exceptional case, not a routine reproductive mode for the Chinese water dragon: the vast majority of eggs laid by an isolated female stay unfertilised and therefore non-viable. This finding is reassuring on one specific point without turning occasional egg-laying into something every solo female should be expected to do.

What this means for a solo female

In practice, a clutch from a never-mated female is therefore not necessarily a sign of a sexing error or accidental access to a male: she may simply be laying unfertilised eggs, a common and harmless behaviour in many female reptiles. The real point of vigilance is the laying itself, not its genetic origin: a nesting box with loose substrate should stay available at all times, and any difficulty expelling eggs (dystocia) calls for a prompt vet visit.

What this does not change about monitoring

Whether the eggs are fertilised or not, the laying period remains physiologically demanding: a female struggling to lay, showing lethargy or a persistent abdominal swelling should be examined without delay, as dystocia remains an emergency in lizards.
