A corn snake may look indifferent to who's handling it, but its sense of smell tells a different story depending on how it's housed. A study by Nagabaskaran, Burman, Hoehfurtner and Wilkinson, published in 2021 in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, compared corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) housed in an enriched terrarium (multiple hides, varied textures, elements changed regularly) with tankmates in a standard enclosure, testing their ability to tell the scent of a familiar handler from that of a stranger (see the study). Discrimination limited to enriched snakes
Snakes housed in the enriched terrarium clearly told their usual keeper's scent apart from a stranger's, reacting differently to the two stimuli. Snakes in the standard tank showed no measurable discrimination between the two scents at all.
