Which terrarium for a corn snake? Size, security and budget

🦎 Reptiles · 🏠 Bedding & habitat · updated 2026-07-11

For an adult corn snake, the recommended terrarium measures at least 100 × 50 × 50 cm, with the ideal being around 120 cm in length for an animal that reaches 1.20 to 1.50 m. The corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) may be kept by private owners in France within the limits set by current regulations: check the applicable rules before acquiring one.

What dimensions depending on the snake's age?

A juvenile feels safer in a small volume: a 30 to 40 cm faunarium works for the first months. Around one year old, move up to 80 cm, then to the final 100 to 120 cm terrarium. A simple rule: length plus depth should approach the animal's total length. Height is not wasted either — this snake readily climbs on branches and climbing supports.

Which selection criteria matter most?

Glass, OSB or PVC: which should you choose?

Glass (120 to 220 €) is the most common and easy to clean. OSB insulates better in a cool room, while PVC combines light weight and thermal inertia but costs more. In every case, pair it with thermostat-controlled heating and a safe substrate such as beech chips or aspen.

What overall budget for the setup?

Expect 250 to 450 €: terrarium, heating and thermostat, decor, substrate and humidity monitoring. The snake itself costs 50 to 120 € depending on the morph. Monthly upkeep is very low: one thawed prey item every week to ten days plus a little electricity. Add some freezer space for the prey stock and the setup is complete for fifteen to twenty years of keeping. Find all our guides on the reptile hub.

Frequently asked questions

Can two corn snakes be kept together?

It is not recommended: the species is solitary, and cohabitation creates stress and risks at feeding time. One terrarium per snake remains the rule.

Can a converted aquarium work?

Not without modification: top-opening access stresses the animal and ventilation is insufficient. A proper terrarium with secured sliding front doors is a far better choice.
