Branches, vines and climbing supports turn a bare terrarium into a space to explore: they encourage physical activity, provide basking perches under the lamp and even help shedding through rubbing. Which climbing supports for which species?
A bearded dragon appreciates a large, stable branch leading to a platform under the spot lamp; a corn snake makes full use of vines and horizontal branches; arboreal geckos demand vertical bamboo and criss-crossed vines. Even the ground-dwelling leopard gecko happily climbs flat rocks and low branches. The key point: a diameter at least equal to the width of the animal's body.
Which criteria make a safe purchase?
- Non-resinous wood: oak, beech, hazel, grapevine, cork — never fresh pine or fir;
- Rough surface that aids grip and shedding;
- Stable mounting: reinforced suction cups, screws or wedging — a fall can injure;
- No chemical treatment, varnish or pesticide;
- Coated flexible vines for lightweight arboreal species.
Can you collect branches from the wild?
Yes, provided you treat them: brush, rinse, then bake at 110 °C for 30 to 60 minutes or soak in boiling water to eliminate parasites and mould. Avoid wood collected by roadsides or near treated fields. This free option pairs very well with a store-bought 3D background.
How should you arrange the supports in the terrarium?
Create pathways: from the floor to the basking spot, from the basking spot to a raised hide. Leave open areas for hunting and always place a main branch under the lighting, at a safe distance from the lamp — 25 to 30 cm from a heat spot to prevent burns. Finally, vary diameters and orientations: it is this diversity of routes that keeps the animal muscular and alert. Frequently asked questions
How often should a branch be replaced?
In a dry setup, a branch lasts for years. In a humid tropical terrarium, inspect it monthly: mould or softening means it must be replaced.
Are reptile hammocks useful?
Yes for bearded dragons, which love lounging up high. Choose a model with strong suction cups (8-15 €) and wash it weekly.
