Enriching a Blue Tongue Skink Terrarium: Digging, Hides, Foraging
The blue tongue skink is a curious, intelligent ground lizard: in a bare setup it paces, scratches at the glass, or freezes. Enrichment isn't a luxury but part of its welfare: a landmark review by G. Deep substrate for digging
The skink loves to burrow. Provide at least 8 to 12 cm of loose, dust-free substrate (coco fibre, fertiliser-free topsoil, a soil-sand mix) so it can dig tunnels and thermoregulate at depth. Turning meals into a search game
Instead of always placing the bowl in the same spot, scatter food pieces around the enclosure or tuck them under a leaf, inside a tube, or beneath a piece of bark. The skink then uses its nose and probing blue tongue, which lengthens active time and reduces boredom. Hides, relief and rotation
Offer several hides (at least one warm side, one cool side), add cork bark, roots, half-pots and a humid area for shedding.
