Water parameters for shrimp (Neocaridina, Caridina): the beginner's guide
Dwarf shrimp have become nano-aquarium stars, but success depends first on stable water parameters. They are also very sensitive to certain contaminants: toxicity studies on freshwater shrimp show that copper is lethal at very low concentrations, on the order of a few hundredths of a milligram per litre in the most sensitive species (research on Google Scholar). Neocaridina: tolerant and ideal for beginners
Neocaridina (such as the Red Cherry) tolerate a wide range: GH 6 to 12, KH 3 to 8, slightly basic pH and a temperature of 20 to 25 °C. This is the perfect group for a first shrimp tank. Their hardiness forgives small mistakes, provided you keep parameters stable rather than "perfect".
Caridina: more demanding
Caridina (Crystal Red, Bee) need soft, acidic water, often obtained with remineralised RO water over active substrate, with low pH and near-zero KH. They suit hobbyists already comfortable with measurements. Mixing the two groups in one tank is discouraged, as their needs are opposite.
The danger of copper and medications

Which shrimp should I choose to start?
The Neocaridina (Red Cherry and colour variants): tolerant, colourful and easy to breed. The more demanding Caridina come later.
Why do my shrimp die after a water change?
Often too sudden a parameter swing or a trace of copper in the new water. Split changes into stages and ban all copper-based products.
Can I mix Neocaridina and Caridina?
It is discouraged: their hardness and pH requirements are opposite, so no setting truly suits both at once.
