Goldfish tank size: how many litres, how many fish and why growth depends on it
The goldfish carries a reputation as an "easy" pet happy in a bowl. That is false, and the belief cuts thousands of lives short. A goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a hardy cold-water fish that keeps growing throughout its life and produces a lot of waste: it needs volume. The real minimum: forget the bowl
For a first goldfish, aim for at least 50 to 60 litres, then add roughly 40 to 50 litres per extra fish. Slim-bodied varieties (comet, shubunkin) swim a great deal and need even more, often a pond. Why volume drives growth
In too small a volume, the goldfish accumulates its own growth-inhibiting hormones and lives in water loaded with nitrate: it stays small not because it "adapts", but because its skeleton stalls while its internal organs keep developing. This forced stunting comes with deformities, swim-bladder trouble and an early death. A properly housed goldfish can exceed 15 to 20 cm and live more than ten years.
How many fish in what volume
Fewer fish in more water is always better. Two goldfish in 100 to 120 litres do far better than four crammed into 60 litres. Do not mix just anything
