The axolotl fascinates with its smile and feathery gills, and many beginners wonder whether they can pick it up. The short answer: as little as possible. It is a fully aquatic amphibian with bare, permeable skin, very different from a scaled fish. Why you should avoid handling it
The axolotl's skin is coated with a protective slime that defends it from bacteria. Touching it with dry, warm hands or hands carrying soap, cream or residue damages this barrier and opens the door to infection. Taking the animal out of water is also stressful and risky: its external gills are fragile and it breathes poorly in air. You watch and admire it; you don't lift it for fun. When a move is necessary
Sometimes you must move it: cleaning, transfer, treatment. In that case, never grab it bare-handed and dry. Guide it gently into a soft container or a fine, tight-mesh net, always keeping it in water. Avoid rigid nets that catch the gills. The right moves if contact happens
If contact is unavoidable, wet your hands to tank temperature, without soap or products, and be brief. Short, calm, in-water handling limits stress. These precautions follow the logic of our advice on the aquarium hub.
