Axolotl Water Parameters: Temperature, Nitrite and Flow
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an aquatic amphibian far more sensitive to water quality than most aquarium fish. A study published in 2023 in the journal Animals showed that water temperature directly affects its physiology, with excessively high temperatures disrupting its growth and reproduction (study on Google Scholar). Cool water above all
The axolotl thrives at 16 to 18 °C. Above 22 °C, heat stress sets in: loss of appetite, retracted gills, greater vulnerability to infection. Ammonia and nitrite: zero tolerance
Because it has no scales, the axolotl absorbs toxins directly through its skin and feathery gills. Ammonia and nitrite must stay at 0 mg/L at all times, and nitrate below 20 mg/L. This calls for a properly cycled tank and regular water changes of around 20% per week, using dechlorinated water at the right temperature.
A gentle flow, not a torrent
In the wild, the axolotl lives in calm water. Too strong a current stresses it constantly and tires its gills. Aim the filter outlet at a wall or fit a spray bar to break the flow. A fine sand substrate, rather than swallowable gravel, rounds out a safe environment.

Does an axolotl need a heater?
No, it's the opposite: the danger comes from heat. In a cool room no heater is needed, and you often need a way to cool the water in summer.
Can you keep an axolotl with fish?
It's not advised: fish nip at its gills and small ones can be swallowed. Cohabitation stays risky.
