The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an aquatic amphibian that is not kept like a tropical fish: it needs distinctly cool water, gentle filtration, and a floor that carries no risk of blockage. Temperature is the most critical parameter. A study published in 2023 in the journal Animals on the effect of water temperature on axolotl gonad growth confirmed that individuals raised at high temperatures show impaired reproduction, underlining the species' sensitivity to heat. What temperature should you aim for?
An axolotl is best kept around 16 to 18 °C, and you must avoid sustained spikes above 22-23 °C, which cause stress, loss of appetite, and vulnerability to infection. What volume and filtration?

Which floor should you choose?
- Fine sand: the safest substrate, because an axolotl sometimes sucks up the floor while eating.
- Bare bottom: easy to clean, often recommended for juveniles.
- Gravel to avoid: small stones that are swallowed can cause serious gut impaction.
Decor and hiding spots
One or two hides (a tube, a half pot) and dim lighting reduce the stress of this animal, which is no fan of bright light. Plants, real or soft-edged artificial ones, complete the layout without harming its delicate skin.

Can an axolotl live without a heater?
Yes, it needs no heater: the real challenge is keeping the water cool enough in summer, not warming it.
Can you keep an axolotl with fish?
It is discouraged: fish may nip at its gills and thermal needs often differ.
