What sleeping setup and enclosure work under canvas?
- A lockable rigid carrier as a fixed overnight spot, rather than free roam under the canvas, which is too easy for an escape artist to tear or lift.
- A fine-mesh foldable pen for supervised playtime outside, alongside the carrier for sleeping.
- A familiar blanket or hammock brought from home, whose scent is reassuring in a completely new setting.
How do you manage predator scents and overnight safety?
A review by Apfelbach, Blanchard, Blanchard, Hayes and McGregor, published in 2005 in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, synthesises numerous studies on predator odor detection in mammalian prey species (see the study). The authors show that even a faint predator scent trace — fox, stray dog, wild feline — triggers measurable stress responses in prey species. While camping, that's a good reason to never leave a ferret unsupervised outside the tent, even penned, and to pick a site away from areas with regular wildlife or dog traffic.
What temperature and hydration precautions matter?
- Check the site's overnight weather: a ferret copes poorly with nights near 0°C without reinforced insulating bedding.
- Keep fresh water available at all times, more prone to spilling under a tent than at home.
- Avoid the hottest hours of the day for outdoor time in direct sun, since a ferret regulates body temperature poorly.

Can a ferret sleep under supervised free roam in the tent at night?
That's not recommended: the risk of escaping through an improperly locked zipper is real, and a closed carrier stays safer overnight.
Is a harness enough for camping?
Only for supervised daytime outings; it never replaces a pen or carrier for moments without direct supervision.
