Biodegradable dog poop bags: what a composting study shows

Bags tested under real composting conditions
Danuta Dróżdż, Krystyna Malińska, Przemysław Postawa, Tomasz Stachowiak and Dorota Nowak, of the Częstochowa University of Technology, published, in 2022 in the journal Materials, a study on the degradation of biodegradable plastic poop bags in laboratory green-waste composting reactors (see the study). The bags were tracked at four weeks and again at 90 days of composting.
Full breakdown, but only under the right conditions
Main finding: all the biodegradable bags tested had decomposed 100% after 90 days of active composting, with partial breakdown already visible at four weeks. But this success depends on precise conditions of temperature, moisture and aeration, typical of industrial composting or a well-managed, regularly turned home compost heap — not a simple pile of green waste left untended at the bottom of the garden.
What this study does not show
It says nothing about what happens to most biodegradable bags bought at the supermarket, which in practice end up in the bin or in landfill rather than in a compost heap: in standard landfill, the lack of oxygen and heat slows or prevents this same breakdown. It also does not compare the bags tested against bags certified to other standards, or the various bio-based materials against each other.
What it changes at the point of purchase
- Check for a composting certification (the European EN 13432 standard in particular) rather than relying on the word "biodegradable" alone, which has no precise legal definition.
- Actually compost the bag if the goal is environmental: thrown in the regular bin, a biodegradable bag brings no extra environmental benefit over a standard plastic one.

Does a "biodegradable" bag break down in the bin?
No, or only very slowly: this study measures breakdown under active composting conditions, not in ordinary landfill, where the lack of oxygen slows the process.
