What does research show about citronella collar effectiveness?
A study by Juarbe-Diaz and Houpt, published in 1996 in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, followed nine dogs with problem barking fitted with a citronella spray collar for two weeks. Seven out of nine owners reported a clear reduction in the frequency, intensity and duration of barking, a result rated at least as satisfactory as the electric collar by the owners surveyed.
Is the citronella collar really gentler than the electric collar?
A later study by Sargisson and colleagues, published in 2011 in International Scholarly Research Notices, confirmed a significant reduction in barking among dogs fitted with an Aboistop citronella collar, without the distress signs associated with electric shock (see the study). The mechanism relies on sensory surprise rather than pain, which explains better acceptability among both owners and observers.
Which types of barking does this collar actually help with?
- Repetitive nuisance barking: attention-seeking, boredom, reaction to outside noises — the best-documented ground in the available studies.
- Dog left alone at home: useful alongside a treat-dispensing toy that keeps the dog occupied rather than just suppressing the symptom.
What are the limits to keep in mind?
The samples in these studies remain small, and the collar does not treat the cause of barking linked to separation anxiety or fear: in those cases, advice from a behaviorist is preferable to any corrective device. The citronella reservoir also runs out after a few dozen triggers, which calls for regularly checking its actual effectiveness.
What budget should you expect?
A citronella spray collar generally costs between 30 and 60 €, refill included for the first months of use.
