Wet food and weight management: what water content actually changes

When fed a diet very high in water, many cats spontaneously cut their calorie intake, with no restriction imposed at all. A study by Wei, Fascetti, Villaverde, Wong and Ramsey, published in 2011 in the American Journal of Veterinary Research, compared the same canned diet fed to 16 cats either at 80% moisture or freeze-dried down to 10% moisture, and found a significant drop in energy intake and body weight with the higher-moisture version (see the study). Why does water content matter so much for calorie intake?
A high-moisture food takes up more stomach volume for the same number of calories, which triggers a feeling of fullness sooner, before the cat has eaten an excess of energy. Kibble, very calorie-dense in a small volume, does the opposite and makes quiet overconsumption easier, especially with free feeding.
How to apply this without upsetting the cat's appetite?
Replacing part of the kibble with wet food, rather than switching everything abruptly, lowers the risk of refusal in a cat that's been used to kibble for years. Weighing the total daily ration in calories, rather than in volume, remains essential to confirm the switch genuinely lowers overall energy intake.
What practical points are worth keeping in mind?
- Quality wet food (1.50 to 4 € per portion) costs more day to day than kibble, a budget point worth planning for before the switch
- A bowl of fresh water nearby still matters even with a wet diet, since food moisture doesn't cover the full hydration need on its own
- Spreading the transition over one to two weeks, gradually mixing the two textures, lowers the risk of digestive upset
- A cat already slightly overweight tends to benefit more from this switch than a cat at a stable weight, where the effect stays more modest
