A cockatiel will happily beg for a bite of whatever its owner is eating, but several common foods are genuinely dangerous to it. Avocado tops the list: a study by Hargis and colleagues, published in 1989, documented fatal poisoning of caged birds by the persin found in avocado, with a lethal dose of just a few grams in small birds (see the study). The absolute toxins
Avocado, chocolate (theobromine), caffeine, alcohol, and very salty or very fatty foods must be banned entirely: even a small amount can cause heart problems, liver damage, or sudden death. Apple and pear seeds and stone-fruit pits contain cyanogenic compounds, so always remove seeds and pits before offering a piece of fruit.
False friends and excesses
Other foods aren't toxic but unbalance the diet: bread, biscuits, dairy (the bird can't digest lactose), and too many sunflower seeds, which are too fatty. A cockatiel fed mostly on sunflower develops deficiencies and becomes overweight. Instead, build a base of pellets and varied seeds, as explained in our guide to feeding a cockatiel.
Preventing accidents at home
Many cases of poisoning happen during free flight, when the bird picks at an unattended plate. Put risky foods away, never share your own meal without checking, and watch your houseplants too, as some are toxic. If you suspect ingestion, contact an avian vet without delay.
