The budgie is a lively little bird that needs to fly, not just climb: a cage that is too narrow is one of the leading causes of distress and repetitive behaviours. A study by Cheryl Meehan, Joseph Garner, and Joy Mench, published in 2004 in Developmental Psychobiology, showed in parrots that a lack of space and enrichment promotes the development of cage stereotypies. Width matters more than height
Contrary to a common belief, a budgie needs horizontal space to fly from one perch to another, not a tall, narrow cage. For a single budgie, aim for at least 60 cm wide, but the wider the better. Minimum dimensions to respect
- One budgie: 60 × 40 × 40 cm at the strict minimum, more if the bird rarely comes out.
- A pair: increase the width noticeably so each can fly without hindering the other.
- Bar spacing: 10 to 12 mm maximum to stop the head getting stuck.

Horizontal bars and daily outings
Horizontal bars on at least two sides let the budgie climb, an activity it loves. But no cage, however large, replaces daily free flight in a secured room: it is the combination of the two that ensures its balance. The overall setup budget is costed in our budgie starter kit.

Does a large cage remove the need for outings?
No, even an indoor aviary does not replace daily free flight: the budgie needs to explore a larger space and burn energy outside its cage every day.
Do two budgies need a bigger cage?
Yes, two birds need noticeably more width to fly and perch without conflict; you do not just add a perch to the same single cage.
Does cage height matter?
