The African grey: the sensitive intellectual
Famed for its cognitive abilities and speech mimicry, the grey is also a sensitive bird, prone to stress and feather picking if bored. It demands constant mental stimulation. Its start-up budget is already substantial, as shown in the African grey budget.
The Amazon: the expressive singer
Sturdy, energetic and theatrical, the Amazon sings, whistles and readily "talks". It can be very loud and needs plenty of occupation, notably foraging. It is an expressive parrot that suits anyone who accepts the noise level.
The macaw: the giant that impresses
The macaw is the biggest and most spectacular, but also the most demanding: it needs a very large space, an XXL cage, toys to match and a powerful beak to keep busy. Its calls carry far. It is not a first parrot.
The shared needs
In every case: a large, suitable cage, sturdy accessories (see the essential accessories for large parrots), a varied diet without all-seed feeding, an avian vet and above all plenty of time. None of these birds is a "decorative" animal. The right choice depends on your tolerance for noise, your space and the time you can give.
