In short: 2 to 3 cm as an adult, 20 L minimum for a colony of 10, water between 18 and 25 °C. A peaceful, gregarious invertebrate that grazes the decor in a colony and is kept ten or more strong. Copper is lethal to it even in tiny doses: ban any fertilizer or medication containing it, and acclimate it drip by drip.
Hardscape designed for its swimming zone
The swimming zone dictates the decor: a Cherry shrimp moves at the bottom, so soft sand (never sharp gravel), hollow roots and open patches to sift make up its ground. An aquarium’s enrichment is its hiding places and its currents — not fluorescent ornaments.
Group life: the first enrichment
From 10 individuals up, the Cherry shrimp becomes itself again: hierarchies settling, displays, coordinated swimming — in small numbers it lives in chronic stress and loses its colours — group size is the species’ first “toy”, before any decor purchase.
Food as occupation
