In short: Medium to large athletic cat (2.5 to 6.5 kg), short spotted coat, high energy and a sociable character. The Ocicat needs a weekly pass with a soft brush or grooming glove, more during the moult. Its light shedding makes it an easy housemate, but brushing remains bonding time not to skip.
Litter: the most sensitive product in the house
For its build, a tray at least 60 cm long, fine unscented litter and a quiet spot away from the bowls. Golden rule: one tray per cat plus one, scooped daily — most toileting accidents start there.
Health watch-points for the Ocicat
The breed is monitored for: pyruvate kinase deficiency and progressive retinal atrophy (rdAc). Check claws every three to four weeks, inspect teeth and ears while grooming, and keep parasite treatment year-round even indoors. Life expectancy: 12 to 16 years — and for anything unusual, the vet comes before the forums.
