🏠What cage for a Siberian chipmunk? Aviary size, mesh and setup

Siberian chipmunk : An aviary of at least 100 x 100 x 180 cm, as large as possible, with several hay-lined wooden nest boxes including one placed high up. Sturdy fine-mesh metal wire, never plastic.

Minimum dimensions: think aviary, not cage

For a Siberian chipmunk, the right “cage” is really an aviary of at least 100 × 100 × 180 cm, comparable to a large parrot aviary. Height is criterion number one: this climber covers hundreds of metres a day leaping and scaling. Below these dimensions, stereotypies (spinning, pacing) are almost guaranteed.

Materials: fine-mesh metal wire only

Only sturdy fine-mesh metal wire (1.5 cm maximum) on a metal or protected hardwood frame: plastic gets chewed through within days, and chipmunks squeeze through surprisingly small openings. Check the latch — a simple hook will not stop this escape specialist. A deep base tray holds a 10 to 15 cm layer of substrate for digging and hoarding.

Location and temperature

A calm, bright room with no direct sun, draughts or excessive heating: 15 to 22 °C is ideal. In winter, a cool but frost-free room respects its natural semi-torpor (our guide to minimum temperatures for rodents details the thresholds). A spot against a wall at eye level reassures it more than the middle of a busy room. See the full species portrait on the Siberian chipmunk profile.

Frequently asked questions

Will a large rat or ferret cage do?

Rarely: most top out at 150 cm with widely spaced bars and plastic parts. A metal parrot aviary, adapted with wooden platforms, is a much better starting point.

Can a Siberian chipmunk live outdoors?

Yes, a solidly meshed outdoor aviary (including the floor — it digs) is actually ideal, provided there is an insulated frost-free shelter, summer shade and protection from predators. Escape is the main risk: a double door is strongly advised.

Does a Siberian chipmunk cage need a wheel?

It is optional if the aviary is big enough for leaping and climbing. If you add one, pick a very large diameter (30 cm and up) with a solid running surface and no spokes to trap the tail.
