What minimum dimensions should you respect?
A wire cage with narrow bar spacing (no more than 1 cm, since a degu is an excellent climber and a skilled escape artist) with several wooden levels offers the best setup. Plan for at least 0.5 m² of combined floor space across the levels for a group of two to four degus, with ramps rather than vertical ladders to protect their fragile tail.
Does the cage need a sand bath?
- Yes, permanently or at least several times a week: a sand bath is essential for keeping a degu's coat in good condition.
- Choose a container wide enough for two animals to roll in it at the same time.
- Special chinchilla/degu sand works well; never use cat litter sand.
