Korean chipmunk hibernation: what to watch for in winter

What the research shows about digestion during hibernation
A study by Liu and colleagues, published in 2024 in the journal Animals on wild Korean chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus), found that hibernation noticeably alters the structure of the colonic epithelium as well as the composition of the gut microbiota compared with the active period (study on Google Scholar). This finding, obtained directly in the species kept as a pet, explains why an abrupt change of diet upon waking can upset its digestion more than usual.
Respecting rest phases

Checking weight before and after winter
Weighing the animal in late autumn, before the slowdown, and again once fully awake in spring, helps catch excessive weight loss that would warrant a vet visit; in between, the animal's spontaneous wake-ups offer a chance to discreetly observe its general condition without handling. A dull coat, crusted eyes, or total unresponsiveness even during a spontaneous wake-up are reasons to move past simple observation and seek veterinary advice without waiting for spring.
Reintroducing food gradually
