Ryan published a study measuring the hearing thresholds of the Mongolian gerbil using a behavioural avoidance test in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America in 1976. The author showed that gerbils perceive frequencies from 0.1 to 60 kHz, with peak sensitivity around 1 to 16 kHz well beyond human hearing — a range close enough to the human audiogram at low frequencies that the species has since become a standard model in hearing research.
