What should the daily base diet be?
A pellet mix formulated specifically for mice, low in oily seeds (sunflower, peanut) and rich in whole grains, should form the base of the diet. Those fatty, highly palatable seeds are often picked out first at the expense of everything else, an imbalance we also cover in our comparison of seed mix versus pellets for hamsters.
Should you add animal protein?
Yes, unlike a guinea pig, which is strictly herbivorous, a mouse is omnivorous and benefits from a small occasional protein boost: a little cooked egg white, plain cottage cheese or mealworms twice a week is plenty, without overdoing it.
Which fresh foods should you favor?
- A few fresh vegetables each day (broccoli, carrot, cucumber) in small amounts, removed before they wilt.
- The occasional piece of fruit, high in sugar and best kept as a rare treat rather than a daily staple.

How do you prevent excess weight?
Measure the daily portion rather than keeping a bowl filled at all times, and limit store-bought treats to once or twice a week: their sugar and fat content far exceeds the animal's real needs, as covered in our guide on treats for rodents. An overweight mouse faces a higher risk of liver trouble and a shorter lifespan.

Does a mouse drink much water?
Not much in absolute terms, but fresh water must stay available at all times through a bottle checked every day to rule out any leak or blockage.
Can you give a mouse bread?
Only a very small amount, rarely, and only dry bread with no added salt or fat; it's in no way a food it needs for balance.
Does a mouse hoard food like a hamster does?
Yes, it happily stashes food in its nest: remember to regularly clear out forgotten fresh food before it goes moldy.
