A problem designed to test flexibility

Researchers presented six anoles with a two-well apparatus, only one containing food, with the rewarding well gradually covered by a moving blue disc until access was fully blocked. Solving it required working around the obstacle rather than pushing straight at it, a task few researchers expected a small lizard to master.

Results that rival some birds

On average, the anoles tested solved the problem in three fewer attempts than birds faced with comparable tasks in other studies, using several different strategies and showing rapid associative learning. This behavioural flexibility contradicts the assumption of a rigid repertoire in small diurnal lizards.
