Ball python and UVB: do you really need a UVB lamp?
For decades, the assumption was that a secretive snake, mostly active at dusk, had no need for UVB at all. The old "ball pythons need nothing" belief
The ball python (Python regius) spends most of its days hidden, which long justified skipping UVB lighting entirely in favour of a simple basking spot. This practice remains possible and does not cause an immediate deficiency if the diet supplies enough vitamin D3, but it deprives the animal of a source of natural synthesis.
What the Ferguson zone classification suggests
The "Ferguson zones" established by this study rank species by their natural exposure, from zone 1 (minimal exposure, burrowing or nocturnal species) to zone 4 (strictly sun-loving species). A ball python sits close to zone 1, which supports adding a low-output UVB tube rather than none at all: the animal stays free to move toward or away from it as needed.
Which lamp to actually pick
A low-percentage T5 UVB tube (often around 5%), placed above an open part of the enclosure and well away from hides, costs between 25 and 45 € depending on length, reflector included. It should always coexist with at least two hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool side, so the animal keeps the choice of exposing itself or not.
Practical pointers
- Low UVB rather than none: a zone-1 tube suits a ball python, no need for a high-output one.
- Choice left to the animal: always provide hides outside the direct exposure zone.
- Regular replacement: a UVB tube loses effectiveness before it stops lighting up — replace it every 6 to 12 months.
