Rabbit probiotics: a study finally puts numbers on disease and mortality effects

Our guide to rabbit supplements stays cautious about probiotics, for lack of solid numbers in everyday use. A 2022 study shifts that picture a little by precisely measuring the effect of one specific strain, in a context worth understanding properly before drawing conclusions for your own rabbit. Our other guidance is gathered in the rabbit food section.

What the study measured

A team led by Elena Colombino and Ilaria Biasato, from the University of Turin, published three zootechnical trials in 2022 in the journal Animals, on rabbits given one billion colony-forming units of Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL per kilogram of feed per day (see the study). The researchers tracked blood parameters, faecal score, caecal pH, microbiota composition and, above all, disease incidence and mortality across batches of thirty rabbits per trial.

A targeted effect, not a miracle food

The result is more nuanced than a plain "it works": the supplementation did not meaningfully improve growth, blood parameters, caecal pH or microbiota composition. It did, however, reduce disease incidence and mortality compared with the control group, an effect the authors interpret as better resistance to infectious episodes rather than a measurable digestive performance gain.

What this means for a companion rabbit

The study's context remains a farming one: growing rabbits, housed in batches, facing health pressures tied to stocking density. A companion rabbit living alone or in a pair, in an environment far less exposed to collective pathogens, is not in the same risk situation. The most reasonable translation applies to periods when resistance is genuinely being tested: after antibiotic treatment, during convalescence, or in a recently weaned kit — situations where our guide to gentle weaning diet transitions already recommends caution.

How to choose a probiotic if you do give one

The strain matters far more than a generic "probiotic" label on the packaging: the effect measured in this study is specific to Lactobacillus acidophilus D2/CSL, not automatically transferable to any off-the-shelf product. A dosage expressed in CFU (colony-forming units) per gram, a short, respected best-before date, and above all veterinary advice before any prolonged use remain the criteria that actually matter.

Frequently asked questions

Should a healthy rabbit get probiotics as a precaution?

Nothing in this study supports that: the measured benefit concerns disease resistance in an at-risk context, not an improvement in a rabbit already healthy and well fed on hay.

Does this study apply to probiotics given after gut stasis?

Not directly: gut stasis calls for immediate veterinary care, with probiotics only supporting transit once the emergency has been treated. Find all our guides on the rabbit hub.
