Mini lop rabbit: character, needs and health points to watch

With its floppy ears and round face, the mini lop rabbit is one of the most popular with families. It is credited with a gentle, cuddly temperament — often true, but each rabbit remains an individual, and character depends as much on socialisation as on breed. Above all, those folded ears, which are its whole charm, have a health downside: a study by Johnson and Burn published in 2019 showed that lop-eared rabbits have markedly more aural and dental problems than erect-eared rabbits (see the study). A sociable but sensitive character
The mini lop is generally calm and curious, which makes it pleasant indoors, provided you respect its need for quiet and space. Like any rabbit, it is a gregarious animal that often thrives in a pair: the question is worth thinking through, as we cover in adopting one rabbit or two. Do not be fooled by the word "mini": it needs as much living space and out-of-cage time as any other rabbit.
The ears, a point of vigilance
A lop's ear canal is often narrower and less well ventilated, which encourages wax build-up and ear infections. Dental health, the other priority
Lops are also more prone to dental malocclusions. Yet in the rabbit, the teeth grow continuously and only wear down properly with a diet rich in hay freely available.
