Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a microscopic intracellular parasite that infects the nervous system, kidneys and sometimes the eyes of rabbits. A serological study by Keeble and Shaw, published in 2006 in the Veterinary Record, found antibodies against this parasite in more than half of pet rabbits tested in the UK, with the large majority remaining asymptomatic for their entire lives (study on Google Scholar). How is it transmitted?

Transmission happens mainly through spores shed in the urine of an infected rabbit, later ingested via contaminated food, water or bedding, or passed from a doe to her kits in utero.
