Multiply hiding spots rather than open space
Shy or low-ranking species, such as some corydoras or small tetras, need to be able to drop out of other fish's sight at any moment. Ceramic caves, driftwood roots, PVC tubes dressed with Java moss: each extra hiding spot cuts down visible competition and gives every individual a fallback territory.
Break sightlines with plants
A fully open layout turns the tank into a corridor where dominant fish can watch the whole space at all times.
