Gravel vacuum: cleaning the substrate without breaking the nitrogen cycle
Leftover food, waste and plant debris keep building up in an aquarium's substrate, where they slowly decompose. Why substrate builds up waste even with a good filter
A good filter captures suspended particles, but some heavier waste settles directly into the gravel or sand, out of the current's reach. Left alone, these organic pockets decompose in place and can locally release ammonia, especially in poorly circulated areas of the tank. How a gravel vacuum works
A gravel vacuum, or siphon, pulls water through the substrate during a regular water change: light debris rises with the flow and gets removed, while the heavier gravel settles back down. This technique cleans deep without removing the substrate or lastingly disturbing the bacteria living in it, unlike a full substrate overhaul.
The right frequency and technique
Vacuuming a section of the tank at each weekly water change, covering the whole surface over several weeks, is enough for most community tanks. There is no need, and no benefit, to vacuum the entire substrate at once: that removes too many useful bacteria in a single pass. The special case of planted tanks
In a heavily planted tank, roots take up much of the substrate, making deep vacuuming both harder and less necessary: a light clean around the open areas is usually enough.

Should I vacuum the gravel at every water change?

Does gravel vacuuming kill the good bacteria?
Locally, at the surface, yes, but most of the bacterial population remains in the filter and in the rest of the substrate untouched that day.
Can sand be vacuumed like gravel?
With more care: fine sand rises easily with the flow, so it is better to skim the surface than push the tube deep in.
