What does a microchip actually do?
- It identifies the animal once it has been found and scanned by a vet, shelter or pound, through a number linked to a national database.
- It emits no signal whatsoever: you can never "track" a microchipped ferret remotely, despite a common misconception.
- It remains mandatory in many places and forms the baseline of any reunion strategy.
Is a GPS tracker really suited to a ferret's size?
A study by McMahon, Rachlow, Shipley, Forbey, Johnson and Olsoy, published in 2017 in PLOS ONE, evaluated micro-GPS receivers under 20 g on a small mammal of a size comparable to a ferret (study on PLOS ONE). The authors reiterate the widely accepted rule in wildlife tracking: a worn device should not exceed 4 to 5% of the animal's body weight so as not to hinder its movement. For a ferret weighing 800 g to 1.5 kg, that caps any serious tracker at 40-70 g including battery, which rules out most GPS units designed for dogs.
What practical options exist for a ferret?
- Short-range Bluetooth trackers, lightweight, mostly useful indoors or in a garden close to the house.
- Miniature GPS/cellular trackers, heavier and pricier, best reserved for ferrets already used to wearing a harness all day.
- An engraved tag with a phone number, a low-tech add-on that proves remarkably effective if a neighbour finds the ferret.
Should you combine several devices?
