For a trip longer than two or three days, ferret care usually comes down to two options: a specialised exotics boarding facility or a pet-sitter who comes to the house. Boarding versus a home pet-sitter: what's the difference?
- Specialised exotics boarding typically runs 10 to 18 € a day, with staff used to ferrets but a full change of environment.
- A home pet-sitter usually runs 15 to 25 € per daily visit, keeping the animal in its familiar setting but with more limited human presence during the day.
- Staying with a relative remains the cheapest option, provided the home is properly escape-proofed.
What does research say about stress from an owner's absence?
A study by de Souza Machado, Oliveira, Machado, Ceballos and Sant'Anna, published in 2020 in PLOS ONE, surveyed owners of another small domestic carnivore, the cat, about problems tied to prolonged absence (see the study). The authors found that more than a tenth of the sampled cats showed at least one separation-related problem, including destructive behaviour, excessive vocalisation or house-soiling, more pronounced during extended absences than during short daily outings. That sensitivity to long separations, documented in a domestic carnivore with a broadly similar lifestyle, argues for minimising environmental change for a ferret unused to travel rather than shuttling it back and forth to boarding repeatedly.
What budget should you plan by length of trip?
- For a weekend, a home pet-sitter is often cheaper than boarding and spares the animal any travel.
- For one to two weeks, exotics boarding generally becomes more economical despite the change of environment, with a total budget between 100 and 250 €.
- Always build in a margin for unexpected vet care, rarely included in the base rate.

Frequently asked questions
Can a ferret stay alone for a weekend with just extra food and water left out?
That's not recommended beyond 24 hours: human oversight is still needed for litter, fresh water, and spotting any health issue.
