Introducing a new ferret to a resident one requires respecting the species' social organization rather than forcing immediate cohabitation in a shared cage. Step 1: quarantine and scent swapping
The newcomer should first spend ten to fourteen days in health quarantine, in a separate room, to check its health status. During this time, swap a cloth or bedding item between the two cages: this scent exchange gets each ferret used to the other's presence before any visual or physical contact.
Step 2: first meetings on neutral ground
The first meetings should take place on neutral ground, never in either ferret's own cage, to avoid any territorial defense reflex. Short ten-to-fifteen-minute sessions under constant supervision are enough at first: growling, chasing and hip-bumps are part of the normal repertoire, as long as they stay inhibited and injury-free.
Step 3: lengthen sessions before sharing a cage
Once meetings are peaceful and repeatedly incident-free, gradually extend their duration before considering a shared cage, which should then offer enough space and doubled resources: bowls, hideouts and hammocks. How long does a successful introduction take?
Generally two to four weeks between quarantine and stable cohabitation, sometimes longer with an older or less sociable ferret.
Should growling be a concern?
Not systematically: ferret play is naturally noisy and bitey; only a bite that does not stop or causes injury should end the meeting right away.
Does a senior ferret easily accept a newcomer?
Less easily than a young one: plan a slower introduction and watch its tolerance for the fatigue a kit's play can cause.
