What research shows about insulinoma
A study by Caplan, Peterson, Mullen and colleagues, published in 1996 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, analyzed 57 ferrets with a histopathologically confirmed pancreatic islet cell tumor: hypoglycemia was present in every animal, and 74% had multiple distinct pancreatic nodules rather than a single mass (study on PubMed). That multifocal pattern explains why even careful surgery often leaves some tumor tissue behind.
Recognizing a hypoglycemic episode
- Sudden lethargy: the ferret goes still with a glassy stare, sometimes collapsing on its side mid-activity.
- Drooling and pawing at the mouth: common signs right before or during an episode.
- Hind-leg weakness or seizures in the most severe cases, which call for immediate care.
- Confusion after waking from a nap, sometimes mistaken for simple grogginess rather than a warning sign.
Surgery, medical management, or both
With confirmed insulinoma, an exotics vet often recommends removing the visible nodules, combined with or followed by medical treatment using prednisolone or diazoxide to keep blood sugar stable over time. Neither option removes the risk of relapse entirely, but combining them generally delays the return of symptoms compared with medical treatment alone.
