Alaskan malamute: chondrodysplasia and juvenile cataract screening
The Alaskan malamute is a hardy sled dog, but two inherited conditions are worth understanding before you even reserve a puppy: chondrodysplasia, a form of dwarfism specific to the breed, and hereditary cataract. The first has been documented for decades: a study by Sande and colleagues, published in 1982 in The American Journal of Pathology, covered 300 malamutes and showed it to be an autosomal recessive disease with complete penetrance that disturbs endochondral bone formation at the metaphyses (study on Google Scholar). Chondrodysplasia, a recessive dwarfism specific to the breed
The mode of inheritance was established early on: Subden, Fletch, Smart and Brown, in a study published in 1972 in The Journal of Heredity, described the syndrome as a simple autosomal recessive trait (study on Google Scholar). In practice, two clinically normal but carrier parents can produce affected puppies. These puppies show short, bowed forelimbs, deviated carpi and growth that lags behind their littermates; the historic literature also linked the syndrome to red blood cell abnormalities, hence its old name of dwarfism-anaemia syndrome.
The key point for a buyer: healthy carriers cannot be spotted. Their size, their gait and their radiographs are normal. Only pedigree knowledge lets you reason about risk. Where does screening stand? What to ask the breeder
Let us be honest: as things stand, no validated DNA test exists for malamute chondrodysplasia, because the causative mutation has not yet been identified despite ongoing research. Screening therefore relies on pedigrees and on radiographs of affected puppies, which are informative in very young dogs, roughly between one and three months of age. The American breed club has in fact replaced its former test-mating certification programme with an open database listing known carriers and affected dogs.
So ask the breeder for the full three-generation pedigree, for any known carriers in the lines, for any affected puppies in previous litters, and for their follow-up policy on puppies sold. Hereditary cataract: an annual eye exam, not a DNA test
Northern breeds are particularly affected by cataract, often bilateral and posterior subcapsular in location, and sometimes detectable in young adults. A study by Ricketts and colleagues, published in 2025 in PLOS ONE, explored variants of the CPT1A gene associated with cataract in Northern breeds including the malamute, without reaching a test usable in routine practice for this breed (study on Google Scholar). Screening therefore means an eye examination performed by a specialist veterinary ophthalmologist, repeated annually in breeding animals. Insist on recent eye certificates for both parents, dated less than a year ago.
Care budget and insurance
A puppy affected by chondrodysplasia cannot be cured, only supported, with orthopaedic monitoring, weight management and sometimes long-term pain relief. Cataract, on the other hand, may call for phacoemulsification surgery at a referral centre, a heavy item running from hundreds to a few thousand euros depending on the centre and the number of eyes treated, follow-up aside. Be careful: most policies exclude hereditary and congenital conditions, or anything already showing before the policy started.
