A snuffle mat can clearly be worth it for an indoor cat that eats too fast or gets bored: it slows down eating and replaces some of the time spent waiting by the bowl with simulated hunting. What is a snuffle mat and how does it work?
A snuffle mat is a fabric mat, often made of strips or small pouches, in which kibble or treats are scattered. The cat has to forage with its nose and paws to retrieve every piece, mimicking ground-level foraging rather than food handed over ready in a bowl.
What real benefits for an indoor cat?
A landmark review published in 2016 in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery by Dantas, Delgado, Johnson and Buffington on food puzzles for cats analysed their effects on physical and emotional wellbeing: slower eating, reduced anxiety and certain boredom-related unwanted behaviors, and stimulation of natural hunting behavior (see the study). The snuffle mat belongs to that same family of tools, with the advantage of being washable and having no mechanical parts to maintain.
Snuffle mat or a classic food dispenser: which to choose?
The mat suits a curious cat motivated by food, for short sessions with the owner present at first. A compartment dispenser or a rolling ball often demands less fine dexterity and may suit a more impatient cat better. Nothing stops you alternating between the two to avoid boredom, much like adjusting the choice of food by budget without upending the cat's daily habits overnight.
How to get started with a snuffle mat
- Start with a small amount of clearly visible kibble before burying it deeper
- Use part of the daily ration, not just treats, so the cat doesn't put on weight
- Wash the mat regularly on a low-temperature machine cycle to avoid odours
- Remove it if the cat chews the fabric instead of foraging in it

Does a snuffle mat suit every cat?
Most cats adapt to it, but a very old or arthritic cat, or one not very food-motivated, may prefer a different type of food toy.
Should you add extra kibble on top of the usual ration?
No: it's better to take the amount used from the daily ration so as not to unbalance the cat's diet.
Does a snuffle mat replace an automatic dispenser?
Not really: the mat stimulates scent-driven and motor foraging, while an automatic dispenser mainly paces meals when the owner is away.
